The reality is galling. That in our faux-meritocracy, marketing eats merit for breakfast, that well-hyped mediocrity routinely outshines true excellence, that we regularly purchase the sizzle only to toss the steak aside. But, what if I told you that when it comes to leadership, we don’t just resist rewarding consistent merit, but we actively favor and even celebrate the most glaringly incompetent leaders?
Super interesting piece and one I want to read again when I'm not forced to listen to someone else's TV.....
I've spoken to a few people on my podcast about introversion and consequently, extroversion: Joanna Rawbone, Megumi Miki and Serena Low. We talked about the extroversion bias and how it plays out, in a very really way, in our working world. I don't think we realise just how 'taken in' we are by people who talk a lot - but actually say very little!!
It is just so hard to take that risk sometimes. Thank you.
One of my favorite Alexander Pope couplets:
Words are like leaves, and where they most abound,
Much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found.
