Okay *fine*, but just know that somewhere out there, a younger version of me—told in no uncertain terms that “effort matters most”—is feeling deeply betrayed.

I loved this, though. Funny, sharp, and just self-aware enough to soften the sting: hard work isn’t the same as good work, and treating effort as a standalone virtue leads to a lot of well-meaning mediocrity (ask me how I know).

But now I’m wondering where Carol Dweck would land on this. Maybe there’s a difference between praising effort as *potential* (growth mindset and all) and treating effort as performance. Somewhere along the way, the framing got frozen—and we forgot to update the metric. Curious about your take.

Anyway, really well done. Clear-eyed, funny, and clearly written by someone who worked really, really hard on it. 😉

Thanks. The thing about effort is that it’s value neutral. It’s a means, not an end. Ive wont speak for Dweck, but meaningless or misplaced effort does not foster growth.
