I can relate to this. I grew up with sports as a major component of my life, influencing who my "friend" group was and what they valued. Long story short, learning and getting good grades was something to make fun of in the environment I grew up in. So, while I still got good grades, I didn't push myself actually to learn - I just did it quietly under the radar.
I know firsthand that a shift in mindset can occur, but I wish I could have a conversation with my 18-year-old self. Perhaps I'll get another shot at that with my son.
The good news for your son is that we now have a much better understanding of mindset and that understanding is spreading far and wide. I have no doubt you will guide him well.
