The NFL media has developed a trend recently to talk about "coaching trees" to illustrate where NFL head coaches each have come from in philosophy in practice. Mostly illustrated by who worked for who as an assistant on their way up.
Is there something similar in the education world with professors?
Not that I ever encountered. Most professors are hired on their credentials, achievements (publications), and experience with different emphases depending on the institution and even discipline. There is an element of “who you worked with,” particularly at more elite institutions, but it’s not so systematized as what you describe.
