I am long in my career. I’ve had many bosses but never a leader. With one boss, we used to do as much work as we could while she was away because she would never let us move forward. Luckily we could get the job done without her knowing. It was so stressful. Always looking over our shoulders. I had to leave after 3 years.
I’m sorry you had that experience with your boss. When a boss is literally an obstacle to productivity due to micromanagement or its opposite—severe neglect—that boss is definitionally incompetent. The same goes for harassers and other bully bosses. When we start acknowledging that these flaws are not just foibles or mere shortcoming offset by supposed virtues and are fundamental incompetence, we can then replace bosses with true leaders.
