Listen now | Think of a clenched fist. What comes to mind? For most people a fist evokes strength, aggression, and even a touch of violence. A raised fist screams defiance and declares revolutionary solidarity. A fist shaken in the face? It’s a prelude to a fight. In our culture, fists are undeniably masculine. Men punch, and women slap.
Great question! A wise man once told me that the best way to assure that you won’t delude yourself is to ask yourself the question, “am I deluding myself?” I wrote on this very topic a while back: https://jimsalvucci.substack.com/p/becoming-self-aware-of-self-delusion. Self-awareness is key to developing character, which is key to good leadership.
Someone recently shared a story with me of a CEO they'd watched in a meeting. One of their c-suit executives' mobile phones happened to go off. The CEO glared at them and pointed. The executive's phone bounced around their hands like a slippery fish and they went red and looked clearly frightened and belittled.
A c-suite executive, being made to feel like that by a gesture of their CEO. They may as well have shaken a fist at them, hu!?
How do you know you are an Ella? I don’t want to be one ever.

I have been in that room. Such behavior is appalling and serves no function but to make the CEO feel more powerful. Shaking a fist indeed!
